Shipping Container Office Conversion: What You Need

A shipping container makes a strong, secure and movable office, which is why you see them on jobsites, in equipment yards and at warehouses. Turning an empty box into a space people can work in all day takes a few key pieces. Here's the checklist.

Choose your container size

  • 10' container: a compact single-person office or security booth.

  • 20' container: the most common choice, room for two or three desks and storage.

  • 40' container: a larger office, or an office and storage room in one unit.

Insulation

Steel heats up in the sun and gets cold at night, and without insulation you'll also get condensation on the inside walls. Insulated walls keep the temperature steady and protect electronics and paperwork. An R-13 wall is a solid baseline for most climates.

A proper door

People shouldn't be swinging open cargo doors to get to their desk. A walk-through man door is essential; a 3068 (3'0" x 6'8") fits most container walls. See our Single Man Door | Weld-N-Go, or the Door with Window for extra light.

Windows for light and air

Windows make the space feel like an office rather than a storage box. Dual-pane units help with insulation. Our Weld-N-Go Windows are pre-framed to weld straight into the container wall.

Ventilation

Even with AC, a container needs airflow to control moisture and stale air. Passive vents are simple and need no power:

Power, lighting and climate control

An office needs lighting, outlets for computers and chargers, and an electrical panel to run it all safely. Add an AC/heat unit sized to the container, and protect it with an AC Cage so it can't be stolen. Electrical work should always be done by a licensed electrician to local code.

Storage

Wall space disappears fast. Shipping Container Shelving hooks into the existing anchor points, so you get storage without drilling or welding.

The faster route: an office kit

Sourcing each piece separately takes time. Our Shipping Container Office Kit puts the main parts in one order, for 10', 20' or 40' containers:

  • R-13 insulated walls

  • Two 36" x 36" dual-pane windows

  • 3068 man door

  • 8,000 BTU AC/heat unit with AC cage

  • Two 4' two-bulb light fixtures

  • Three outlets and a 125A electrical panel
