How to Secure a Shipping Container: 7 Upgrades That Stop Break-Ins
A shipping container is a steel box built to cross oceans, so the walls are rarely the problem. Thieves go for the easy points: an exposed padlock, a door that can be pried, an AC unit bolted to the outside. Here are seven upgrades that close those gaps.
1. Cover the padlock with a lock box
The most common container break-in takes a few seconds with bolt cutters. A weld-on lock box surrounds the padlock in steel so the cutters have nothing to grab. Our Weld n Go Standard Lock Box is 1/4" steel and measures 6" x 4" x 4". It's the single best security upgrade for the money.
2. Go low-profile where space is tight
If the doors sit close to a wall or another container, a bulky lock box can get in the way. The Lo-Profile Lock Box gives the same protection with a slimmer footprint.
3. Use a quality padlock
A lock box only works with a good lock inside it. Choose a hardened-steel padlock with a short shackle, so there's as little exposed metal as possible.
4. Protect the AC unit
An air conditioner mounted on the outside of a container office is easy to steal and expensive to replace. An AC Cage surrounds the unit with a 2x4 frame, expanded metal panels and 1" x 1/2" bars, so it stays put and still gets airflow.
5. Secure every man door, not just the cargo doors
Every door you add is another way in. Fit man doors with solid hardware like a Door Lever, and protect their locks too. If people work inside, Panic Bars let them leave quickly while the door stays locked from outside.
6. Think about placement
Where you put the container matters as much as the hardware. Park it where it's visible and well lit. If you can, place the cargo doors facing a wall or another container so there's no room to work a pry bar.
7. Check it regularly
Walk around the container every so often. Look for rust around welds and seals, loose hardware and any sign that someone tried to force a door. Small fixes now prevent big losses later.
